Is Traditional Boxed Software Heading For Extinction?

Hello Everyone,

I was sitting here thinking about a few trends that are happening within the technology world and one thought kept on coming up in my mind. And that is the increased adoption of app stores in technologies we are currently using. From now all Apple products using the "App Store" to Google Android devices using the Android Market. Just recently announced was that starting the next version of Windows, Microsoft will implement its own app store called the Windows Marketplace.

What brought this question into my head was that during a recent visit to Staples, I noticed is that the isles that used to go for one third of the store for computer software is now getting smaller and smaller, and I see that trend just continuing industry-wide. And that is why I am posing this question "Is Traditional Boxed Software Heading For Extinction?"

Now I know you are all reading this and want to know where my opinions are on all of this and where I stand on all of this is that app stores are a WIN, WIN, WIN on all sides (Except for virus & malware creators). And my reasoning for this are as follows:

1. It drastically simplifies the whole software install process - No more trying to figure out if your computer is compatible with a specific program. The app store program is constantly running a check against all programs on the app store to see if it will run on your device. If it is not compatible, then the specific app simply will NOT show as an option to install at all.

2. It drastically reduces the chances of getting infected with Viruses & Malware - For program writers to be even have a chance of getting their applications into a specific app store, all of the app stores mentioned previously take extensive steps to make sure that the apps people purchase from their app stores are free of anything that could harm the purchaser's devices. If a submitted app is found to be or potentially malicious, It is IMMEDIATELY removed from the store and if it is installed on a device, the program is also removed from the device.

3. It makes recovering and upgrading your device a much less painful ordeal - We all have instances where we either had to reinstall everything from scratch on our device for one reason or another or just want to upgrade to a better device, there is always one issue that comes up. And that issue is that all of the software that was purchased will not work or is missing on the device. With purchasing all of your apps from the app store, recovering those apps are now a point and click operation. Now what you do is that in case of the Apple's App Store, all you will do is sign into the app store, single left click on the purchased link, and all of your previously purchased apps will show up in a list. Single left click on the install button and the app will be installed back on your device. In case of the Android Market, purchased apps will be listed under the "Not Installed" section. Just single tap on each one of those and the app will then install back on to your device. All you now have to worry about backing up is your individual documents.

Also, with the trend of going to ultra-mobile devices such as tablets and cellular phones and also computer manufacturers phasing out of the desktop and laptop markets, I really can see a day in the near future where we will not see a software section in most electronic stores. That alone sounds very strange to me, but time will bring about change.

Everything You Post On Social Media (Twitter, Facebook and MySpace) Is Not Private!

Social media (Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and many others) has forever changed the way that people communicate with friends and family near and far. On a personal note, social media has helped me keep in contact or reconnect with family and friends I haven't seen in a long time. But for every good with anything, there is also a bad side when using social media.

Such as two students being recently expelled from school in Atlanta for posting a false comment on Facebook about their teacher being a pedophile, to people losing their jobs because of posts about their boss or employer. Colleges and employers are now checking out people on Facebook (including ALL posted pictures) to gauge their character before hiring them for a job or accepting them into their college. Law enforcement are also using Social Media for locating and apprehending people for various crimes. Social Media has also put gasoline on the fire of many relationship problems and/or divorces in the past few years.

My clients and other people have asked me all the time "Are my posts private?" And my answer is usually "Not Really". Please allow me to explain:

1. Google and Other Search Engines will ALWAYS Locate Your Social Media Profile.

Next time you are on a computer, do this little experiment. Go to Google and type your name in the search box and single left click the "Google Search" button. Your Facebook, Twitter or any other social media profile will ALWAYS be one of the first things that shows up in Google before anything else.

2. No Matter How You Set Your Privacy Settings, Certain People With Certain Credentials Can Have Full Access To Your Profile At Any Time!

With the Stored Communications Act of 1986 - Section 2703, Paragraph (B) - Which states that a governmental entity may require a provider of remote computing service (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, etc) to disclose the contents of any wire or electronic communication. In addition, without required notice to the subscriber or customer, the governmental entity can obtain a warrant issued using the procedures described in the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure (or, in the case of a State court, issued using State warrant procedures). This one section makes it legal for certain people to have FULL access to your social media profiles NO MATTER HOW YOU SET YOUR PRIVACY SETTINGS!

3. Plain And Simple, People WILL Talk And Gossip!

You will not believe how people are connected to each other these days. One person could connect up to five or more people in different circles, and some connections are made in ways that you may never know existed. You will clearly see this on a profile where it states that you have x amount of mutual friends, or on Twitter where the profile will say that you both follow X. And when you post something about another person, it tends to spread around and possibly back to the original partie(s) really, really fast. REMEMBER, this is the Internet, where information is created and shared by EVERYONE!

In conclusion, social media websites can be an excellent tool for communication (especially for small businesses), but before posting that negative comment, PLEASE keep in mind that major consequences and repercussions may happen to you, because of what you are about to say.

How to Digitize Your Home Movies

VHS-C tapes are more likely to be damaged during conversion due to flaws in their adapters.

6. Once converted and imported to your computer, you'll want to back up your memories. This way, if your computer crashes, you won't lose them. Most people back up to an external hard drive. When Will the iPad 3 See the Light of Day?

It's hard to believe but the iPad 2 has only been released for a year. It seems like it's been with us forever already. Everyone's been talking about it since the day it was released.

Even today, everyone is still drooling over the iPad 2. More and more apps are getting released each day and more and more people sign up for an Apple ID. Apple's hold on the tablet market is tremendous. It seems like even if Apple does release the iPad 3, the iPad 2 will continue to sell well into next year. In fact, an iPad that has been refurbished or just well taken care of can have a resale value of at least $300! That's an impressive price.

If you don't remember, Steve Jobs introduced the iPad 2 to the world back in March 2011. Now, people are speculating that the iPad 3 is coming in March, to coincide with the first anniversary of the iPad 2.

There are many reports that say the iPad 3 will arrive in March. The news website "allthingsd" reasons that since Apple still isn't holding an event this February, expect that there will be something in March. Here's what they had to report on the matter:

"Sources say the company has chosen the first week in March to debut the successor to the iPad 2, and will do so at one of its trademark special events. The event will be held in San Francisco, presumably at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Apple's preferred location for big announcements like these."

There are plenty of rumored features of the iPad 3. One of the most notable rumors is that the tablet will feature a screen all the way to the edge. Other speculations to be included on the iPad 3 are a sharper screen resolution with Retina Display, 4G speeds, NFC connection and 3D features.

Will 2012 be the year of the iPad 3? We can only wait and see what Apple has to say. The March event might even be delayed, as the company has recently been under a lot of fire for their labor practices. When the New York Times reported the harsh working environments of Foxconn employees in China, the world took notice. CNN even interviewed an 18 year old employee, describing the working conditions there.

One group even campaigned against the cruel business practices of Apple. It garnered at least 300,000 signatures. Because of tremendous pressure, Apple's current CEO, Tim Cook took action against these allegations.

He said that he would coordinate with the FLA to conduct audits on their Foxconn suppliers. This will show transparency for Apple, because they're famously known for being a secretive company. We'll see an update in the coming weeks regarding this matter.

New Consumer Invention Idea - To Go Coffee Cup With Embedded Wi-Fi Amplifier

Each month, I attempt to come up with 30 potential new inventions, one for each day of the month. Personal Tech devices are always amongst my favorites. Okay so, today, I was sitting in Starbucks peering out the window and noticed a gentleman trying to work on his computer out on the patio, but he had a brick wall between him and the coffee shop, normally he'd have been able to get the signal, but apparently, he wasn't able, so he moved to a different seat to get online.

The other day at another Starbucks, I had noted that someone in their car trying to perhaps get their emails from across the parking lot, they waited until a spot opened up and then drove into the first stall, and started computing on their laptop. Then recently, I noted a cool little picture in a popular business newspaper of a coffee cup with what looked like it had waves coming up, the article was about the creativity boost enabling writers to come up with better ideas in the ambiance of a coffee shop.

Still, that cartoonish picture made me think about my previous observations and challenges of folks getting Wi-Fi within close proximity but not inside the actual store. So, I thought to myself, well, that it would be an interesting idea to have an actual coffee mug which doubled as a Wi-Fi repeater. Okay so, how might I go about designing something like this you might ask? Well, how about some sort of a mesh made out of carbon nano-tubes and graphene coatings, forming antenna around the insulation wall of the coffee mug? That might work.

Perhaps the coffee mug might plug into a USB port, and it might also allow the coffee to stay hot with a small heating element. They do make coffee cup holders that can plug into the side of your computer to keep your coffee warm. Now then, how much would something like this sell for you ask? Well, most of these coffee cups which are pretty nice sell for about $15, it's a pretty big markup, it is significant profit item for a coffee shop.

Therefore, perhaps something like this might double in price and cost 30 bucks, or sell for $29.95 and perhaps you could buy them on the Starbucks website, or on Amazon? Do I think it would sell? I'm sure it would sell, I'm just not sure how many people would buy it right away. Perhaps someone needs to do a market study on this, and go file a patent. If you'd like to discuss this topic with me in greater detail, I have made a few sketches, but I think you get the idea. Please consider all this and think on it.

GPS and SatNav - Removing Misconceptions

The Global Positioning System (GPS), originally designed for military use, has, as it has developed, revolutionised the art or skill of getting from one place to another among the general user population. Its development in coverage and reliability along with other technologies has enabled reasonably cheap SatNav systems for general usage, in our vehicles, mobile phones and other applications. Because of its reliability and growing popularity I believe SatNav is becoming widely accepted but without due consideration as to what it is really about. Many misconceptions have grown, some maybe not important, but in some cases having no awareness or the wrong ideas of what you have got or how it works could lead to problems of various severity.

The technology is fantastic but it is not without fault, just like any other technology it can go wrong. So let us remove these misconceptions and try to understand just where it can go wrong and how serious it may be.

First let us look at what SatNav is. We do know but do not really consider it in full. Now this is merely a loose use of words but many say they have GPS in their car. Well, yes they do, but they also have a full SatNav. This involves some method of obtaining position from orbiting satellites, some form of electronic map to put this position on, some software to navigate from here to there, and you may have engine sensor inputs to provide an inertial navigation back up when satellite signals are lost. That's essentially your SatNav system.

It is just a circumstance that the positioning system is mostly GPS. This is just one Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). Others are developed or in development. GPS is just the most commonly used. If you have car SatNav, this, with the inertial back up, if you have it, is what you are using. GPS is also included in mobile phones.

This next could be easy to fall for as the distinction may not be too obvious on your machine. I have heard some claim they can get SatNav on their mobile phone in the cupboard under the stairs. I am deeply curious of what advanced technology achieves this. The signal from GPS satellites is line of sight. An obstruction will block any satellite it is in the way of. A broom cupboard will block the lot of them. Now the mobile can also be located by the cell network. Although not as accurate, defaulting to the cell network when GPS is lost is handy. But, I do not think this can be classed as SatNav. No satellites are being used. That's the, er, 'advanced' technology out of the way with.

So far it is wordage and a bit of a lack in awareness. The end result is that by some method you can get a position. If you happen to be off road and lose GPS it may be important to realise you have lost some accuracy. GPS could be 10m or better. The cell being 50m at best in urban areas, no great problem, but worse in rural areas, maybe a problem.

Another one. There are many who say with pride that they know how GPS works. Triangulation. I believe they fall for this because it's a legacy from before GPS where control networks were surveyed in by measuring angles. A GPS receiver, specifically the antenna, which may or may not be attached to the box, is positioned by trilateration, using ranges. This was harder to achieve with accuracy in those older days.

Also, satellite pseudoranges are not measured directly, hence along with inaccuracies the term pseudo. They are determined from time differences and light speed, more correctly, the speed of electromagnetic waves as the GPS signal is in the radio or microwave bands, depending on who you listen to. The nearly 300 million m/sec assumed in range calculations is only valid in a total vacuum. Some of the GPS inaccuracies are due to varying light speed. Nanosecond accuracy is required. A thousandth of a second error (1millisec) equates to 200 miles or 300km. Not many realise the importance of such small times.
